Dr Daniel Hubik
MBBS MPsychiatry FRANZCP
Psychiatrist
Dan Hubik is a consultant psychiatrist working in the field of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Part of Dan's work involves helping patients to understand the link between thoughts, feelings and their physical health. It is well known that chronic gut problems can lead to significant mental health issues such as depression and/or anxiety. Conversely, the way we think and feel can affect bodily functions causing problems such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation. Chronic stress can often make the gut hypersensitive and cause conditions to flare up. Helping patients better understand these links – often referred to as the ‘brain-gut axis’ – can significantly improve their quality of life.
After graduating in Medicine from Adelaide University in 2006 with the AMA student medal for ‘outstanding academic achievement and service to medical school and community’, Dan went on to complete his internship at The Royal Adelaide Hospital. After returning to Melbourne, Dan worked in various fields including general surgery before choosing to specialise in psychiatry.
Dan works as a psychiatrist in gastroenterology in both public and private settings with a focus on the ‘functional gut’. Dan also spends part of his week working in psycho-oncology where he helps patients who are undergoing treatment for cancer or struggling with a terminal illness. He is also one of the lead therapists taking part in ground-breaking Australian research examining the use of psilocybin in end of life care.
Dan currently sits on the binational board on the Faculty of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
