Dr Chamara Basnayake

Gastroenterologist

Chamara Basnayake is a Melbourne trained academic Gastroenterologist at Central Melbourne Gastroenterology with a public hospital appointment at St Vincent's Hospital and is a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne.

 

Chamara graduated from medicine at Monash University, completed his physician training at Monash Health where he won the John Burgess prize for best medical registrar and was the Chief Medical Resident. He completed his Gastroenterology training at Monash Medical Centre and St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and subsequently completed a PhD in the treatment of functional gut disorders at the University of Melbourne. Chamara then completed a fellowship in oesophageal motility disorders at KU Leuven in Belgium.

 

Chamara combines a busy clinical practice, research program and teaching commitment. He runs the oesophageal physiology laboratory and functional gut disorders clinic at St Vincent's Hospital.

 

Chamara's research interests are in microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease (including faecal transplantation), functional gut disorders, oesophageal motility disorders and eosinophilic oesophagitis.

 

Chamara has awards in teaching, award for best research for the treatment of IBS at European Gastroenterology week and won the prestigious Ray Clouse Award in 2021 for the world’s best research publication in functional gut disorders by the The Rome Foundation.

 

Chamara is passionate about treating all gastrointestinal conditions, prides himself on providing high quality endoscopy, clear communication with patients and GP's, offers quick access to open access endoscopy at St Vincent's Private Hospital and is happy to discuss urgent referrals.
