Associate Professor Chamara Basnayake
MBBS (Hons) FRACP
Gastroenterologist

Dr. Basnayake graduated in Medicine from Monash University and completed his physician training at Monash Health, where he won the John Burgess Prize for Best Medical Registrar and served as Chief Medical Resident. He pursued his Gastroenterology training at Monash Medical Centre and St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, followed by a PhD in the treatment of functional gut disorders at the University of Melbourne. Dr. Basnayake further specialized with a fellowship in oesophageal motility disorders at KU Leuven in Belgium.

 

As an Associate Professor, Dr. Basnayake balances clinical practice with a robust research program and teaching responsibilities. He is the clinical lead for the oesophageal physiology laboratory and the functional gut disorders clinic at St Vincent’s Hospital. Additionally, he serves as the Principal Investigator for pharmaceutical trials focusing on Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), coeliac disease, and Neurogastrointestinal disorders, contributing to advancements in treatment and patient care.

 

Dr. Basnayake’s research interests encompass the microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease (including faecal transplantation), functional gut disorders, oesophageal motility disorders, and eosinophilic oesophagitis. His contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the TJ Martin Award for Best PhD Project at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne in 2022, the Ray Clouse Award in 2021 for the world’s best research publication in functional gut disorders by The Rome Foundation, and accolades for his teaching and research on IBS at European Gastroenterology Week.

 

Dedicated to treating a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal conditions, Dr. Basnayake is committed to providing high-quality endoscopy services and maintaining clear communication with patients and general practitioners. He offers prompt access to open access endoscopy at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Epworth Freemasons and Hobsons bay Sydenham.

 

Dr Basnayake manages a selective referral process, and only accepts a very limited number of second opinion cases, to ensure focused and effective care.
